National networking by WVMHCA has indicated that many states have a number of different
consumer organizations. For states in this category CONTAC will provide technical
assistance and/or training in organizational structure and leadership. Consensus building
is the first step involved in the process. By identifying a common vision, mission, and
operational values, groups can come to consensus about the role and function of a possible
statewide consumer network. Once consensus has been reached, basic organizational
structure activities can be presented to participants. The formation of 501©(3) status
for operation of non-profit entities and the role of officers, committees and membership
will be defined. Fundraising techniques will be taught and resources will be made
available. Action plans will be developed to address each of these steps and customized
for particular locations. In addition, representatives from among those being trained will
be invited to help form a national consumer network to advocate for the needs of the broad
consumer population.
