The Emotional Support Service Animal (ESSA) Project in conjunction with the West Virginia Mental Health Consumers’ Association, a non-profit community based organization established under the laws of the state of West Virginia and guaranteed under the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ESSA Project objective is to identify and develop ways to establish therapeutic relationships between people with disabilities, and service animals. Presentations are provided to the general public, service clubs and organizations in order to educate the community about the function that the ESSA Project service animals provide.

Plans of this project include helping consumers become aware of their rights with an emotional support service animal. Helping them obtain the documentation for landlords, provide education on how to care for and train an ESSA animal through non-punitive measures, and to provide consultation if or when discrimination is made to that person.

We also hope to accomplish an educational workshop for the benefit of community members in an attempt to de-stigmatize the mental health views held by others and the rights to have a service animal in all public places. An Increase of understanding will only enhance the positive attitudes of these who are unaware of this project and mental health illnesses. Our goals is to improve health image of consumers so they enable themselves to become independent, productive members in the community.
