Collaboration

Identification of and participation in existing meetings such as Mental Health Planning Councils, local Mental Health Associations, public policy planners and mental health authority activities in each state will help consumers strategize for rightful negotiating seats at the table. Through the existing WV Leadership Academy model, plans are developed for consumers and other supporters to develop collaborative approaches toward common goals.

Utilizing the fundamental approaches of the  Leadership Academy technology, consumer-providers and other appropriately trained individuals can provide a means to facilitate conflict-resolution workshops to improve understanding and cooperation among consumers, supporters and psychiatric professionals.

Teams in conflict-resolution, focus groups and train-the-trainers opportunities can be convened, utilizing consumers and providers to develop appropriate solutions to solve disagreements and foster respect and trust. Drawing from the experience of the CONTAC Advisory Committee, immediate attention to issues is ensured.  Utilizing such entities as Legal Service offices, pro-bono lawyers, and advocacy organizations can be standard protocol. Sponsoring dialog groups, facilitated by CONTAC affiliates, is one of the means to help enhance communication and discussion among the various mental health system supporters.
